When the Vikings first learned that a metal sewing needle could be 'enchanted' or magnetized with a 'magical' rock to always point in one direction they believed that they had tapped into some magical power of the Aesir God Tyr himself. Little did they know that they had discovered magnetic north! Guided by these magic needles the Vikings set out to navigate across the vast oceans to engage in peaceful 'trading' with new lands.
