Lonely Planet
Now known as the TAR (or Tibet Autonomous Region), this amazing, peaceful country was criminally invaded by China in 1956, to the utter apathy of the rest of the world. China then proceeded to demolish its culture, a process which continues to this day, so if you want to see the plateau, Potala Palace and Buddhist culture, Tibet is one of those countries you'd better get to quick.
