Your hands are as important as the rest of your body when it comes to keeping warm and dry. In fact they are even more so because your extremities are the first to suffer from frostbite as the body starts to draw blood back to its core in the event of hypothermia. And as with the rest of the body, layering is key; more layers = more trapped air which your body will heat up to keep you warm. Remember - no glove, no love.
