1. Uloola Falls Campground — Royal National Park

1 hr 15 min from Sydney | Hike-in | Beginner–Intermediate

Just over an hour south of Sydney, Uloola Falls is one of the best hike-in camping spots near Sydney in the Royal National Park. The trailhead starts at Heathcote Station, making it one of the few campgrounds genuinely accessible by public transport — one train from Central gets you there. There's also parking at the station if you're driving in.

The trail is around 5km from Heathcote to the campground, passing the beautiful Karloo Pools waterhole roughly halfway — stop for a snack and a swim surrounded by bush. It's especially magical in summer.

Perfect for:

  • Beginner overnight hikers — well-marked trail, close to the city, manageable distance
  • First-timers wanting to test their overnight hiking gear in a low-stakes environment
  • Public transport campers — one train from Central to Heathcote Station trailhead
  • A beautiful bush swim close to home

2. The Basin Campground — Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

1 hr from Sydney | Ferry, water taxi, or 2.8km walk-in | All levels

Perched on the shores of Pittwater, The Basin is one of Sydney's most beloved beach camping spots — and it's easy to see why. As the only campground in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, this large grassy reserve offers stunning waterfront views, excellent facilities, a sheltered beach, and even an inland lagoon. With space for up to 350 campers, it's a lively, social spot that still feels connected to nature — keep an eye out for resident swamp wallabies and kookaburras.

There's no car access, so you'll arrive by ferry from Palm Beach Wharf, water taxi, boat, or a 2.8km hike from West Head Road. Book ahead via the NSW National Parks app — this one fills fast on weekends.

Perfect for:

  • Families and groups — great facilities, wide open grassy space, and a sheltered beach
  • A car-free camping adventure — arriving by ferry or water taxi is half the fun
  • Active campers — swim, explore the surrounding trails, or bring a kayak to paddle the beautiful Pittwater waters
  • Low-effort, high-reward camping — no big hike required

3. Brooklyn Dam Campsite — Brooklyn, NSW

1 hr 15 min from Sydney | Hike-in via Great North Walk | Intermediate | Fuel stove only | No water on site

Tucked away beside the serene Brooklyn Dam in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, this intimate bushland campsite is about as off-the-beaten-track as Sydney camping gets. With room for just four sites, it's a genuinely peaceful escape surrounded by thick scrub, tall shady trees, and the calm waters of the dam right on your doorstep.

Getting here is part of the experience — the route follows a segment of the historic Great North Walk, kicking off with a steep climb before mellowing into beautiful woodland. If you have time, the detour to secluded Dead Horse Bay is well worth it. This is a fuel stove only site — no open fires permitted. There is no guaranteed water on site, so bring a filter as backup.

Perfect for:

  • Small groups after genuine solitude — only four sites, never crowded
  • Knocking off a section of the Great North Walk
  • Birdwatchers — the dam and thick scrub are excellent for spotting local wildlife
  • Public transport campers — train to Brooklyn Station, then hike in

4. Acacia Flat Campground — Blue Mountains National Park

2 hrs from Sydney | Hike-in | Intermediate–Experienced | Water must be treated

Nestled deep in the Grose Valley, Acacia Flat is a remote hike-in campsite in the Blue Mountains surrounded by towering eucalypts and the sound of the river. A short walk away sits the historic Blue Gum Forest — a stunning closed-canopy reserve home to towering Blue Gums, birds, and wildlife. It's a firm favourite among experienced hikers for its gorgeous setting and genuine seclusion.

The hike in from Perry's Lookdown is short but steep, or take the longer scenic route from Pierces Pass. Either way, it's worth the effort. The nearby creek is perfect for a morning dip — bring your bathers and a towel. All water must be treated before drinking.

Perfect for:

  • Experienced overnight hikers after a more challenging hike-in
  • Camping beside an iconic Blue Mountains river
  • Quiet seclusion well away from city noise
  • Nature and wildlife lovers — the Blue Gum Forest is steps from camp

5. Ridge Top Campground - Berowra Heights

1 hr 15 min from Sydney | Walk-in or drive-in | Intermediate | No facilities or water on site

Sitting on a ridge about 800m from Turners Rd in Berowra Heights, this popular Great North Walk campsite punches well above its weight for a no-frills spot. It's a large, flat, shady clearing — the kind of place that just feels right to pitch a tent after a solid day on the trail.

There are no facilities and no water on site, so you'll need to arrive fully self-sufficient. The real reward is a short detour west to an unfenced cliff edge with sweeping views over the Berowra Waters Valley. The surrounding walk through Berowra Creek valley features rock formations, creek crossings, and wide-open bush vistas.

Perfect for:

  • Self-sufficient campers — bring all food, water, and fuel
  • Incredible valley views just a short detour from camp
  • Flexible access — short walk from your car, or a longer hike-in from Cowan Station
  • Knocking off a section of the Great North Walk
  • Public transport campers — train to Cowan Station, then hike in

6. Mount York Campground - Blue Mountains National Park

2 hrs from Sydney | Car camping | All levels | Pit toilets available

Mount York Campground is a hidden gem near Mount Victoria offering car camping in the Blue Mountains with epic views. It's an ideal base for bushwalkers, history buffs, and especially rock climbers — with trad, sport, and bouldering options all close by.

Set up camp, enjoy the mountain sunsets, and explore local walking tracks with sweeping views and rich colonial history. It has a peaceful, off-the-grid feel without being too remote — and fairly reliable mobile coverage if you need it. Book via the NSW National Parks app.

Perfect for:

  • Rock climbers — quick access to iconic Blue Mountains climbing areas
  • Car campers wanting epic views without a big hike-in
  • Couples and groups — stunning sunsets, easy access, picnic-perfect setting
  • Hikers wanting a Blue Mountains base camp for multi-day exploring
